Monkey Subtraction!

I had the students draw a big tree and we used peanuts to represent monkeys to solve story problems about some monkeys in a tree and some fall out. I would call out different problems like 8 monkeys in a tree and 3 jumped out. How many are left in the tree? After we practiced this for a while, the students make their own problem using a die and paper monkeys that they glued to their tree and on the ground.
