Animals in Winter Research!

During the past few weeks, we have been researching Winter Animals. We started out by looking at pictures and drawing diagrams of our animals. We also read non-fiction books and used Pebble Go on the computers to learn about our animals. The students completed several pre-writing activities including a circle map and tree map. Then they wrote their papers.

 

Animals in Winter Research

The students did research in the Library with Mrs. Thornton. Each group learned about a different winter animal and recorded information on a tree map. Then they used the tree map to write sentences about their animal. To bring their projects all together the students created crayon resist illustrations of their animal. For our first research project I think they did a pretty good job. We will be doing more research projects on rainforest animals, zoo animals and farm animals before the end of the year.

Hibernation Day!

To end our study of Animals in Winter, we had a Hibernation Day. The students brought stuffed animals that hibernate like ladybugs, turtles, bears, etc. to school. We ate popcorn to show how animals that hibernate eat a lot of food first. Then the students found a comfortable place to hibernate with their stuffed animals and blankets around the classroom. My co-teacher Ms. Palomo did this lesson while I was teaching math, so I only got pictures of the kids hibernating not eating the popcorn.

The Mitten and The Hat by Jan Brett

We read Jan Brett's books The Mitten and The Hat. We used masks from Jan Brett's website and a blanket to act out The Mitten and wrote about our favorite character. We also created a TLC hedgehog and added a hat and painted snow to reflect the main character in The Hat.

Animals in Winter

To end our unit on Animals in Winter, we created a tree map of what animals do in winter. I let the students glue the pictures to show if they hibernate, adapt or migrate in winter. They also created a class book about animals in winter.

Pengins and Polar Bears

After researching penguins and polar bears, we created a double bubble map comparing the two animals. The students created penguins and polar bears to go along with our thinking map. The picture is not that good, so if you would like a copy of the words send me a message and I can email them to you.

Hibernation Day!

We had a great time pretending to load up on food (popcorn) and then hibernating under our desks. The students also brought stuffed animals that hibernate to school today.
