We are learning about punctuation marks, so we read Who Stole The Cookies From the Cookie Jar and identified the marks in the poem. Then we passed around a cookie jar filled with punctuation cookies while chanting the poem with each student's name. As the students took a cookie from the cookie jar they had to identify the punctuation mark on it. Later I would say a sentence and the students would hold up the correct punctuation mark to go with it.

Jelly Bean Math

To celebrate the letter J, we sorted, counted, made predicitons about more or less, and identified which colors we had more or less of. Each table group was given a large bag of jelly beans and each student a 20 frame mat, and a recording sheet. They sorted the jelly beans by color, used the 20 frame mat to count the number of each color they had and wrote that number beside the corresponding color word. We have been learning how to use the 20 frame to count by 5's and on from 10 and 15. This was a perfect engaging activity for them to practice these skills in a fun way.

Hibernation Day!

To end our study of Animals in Winter, we had a Hibernation Day. The students brought stuffed animals that hibernate like ladybugs, turtles, bears, etc. to school. We ate popcorn to show how animals that hibernate eat a lot of food first. Then the students found a comfortable place to hibernate with their stuffed animals and blankets around the classroom. My co-teacher Ms. Palomo did this lesson while I was teaching math, so I only got pictures of the kids hibernating not eating the popcorn.

Addition Problem Solving

I introduced problem solving today. First we acted out story problems using chairs and our bodies. We pretended that the chairs were the swings on a playground. Some children were swinging and some children where pushing and sometimes other children were playing in the sandbox. We counted all the children acting out the story problem to find the answer. Then, we used a swing set story mat and counters to solve other story problems. Finally, we made up, illustrated and solved our own story problems in our math journal.

We learned how the Native American People discovered popcorn by throwing corn seeds on the fire and how the Iroquios people discovered how to pop corn in clay pots over hot coals.We also learned how to pop our own corn using oil and a stove. Then we popped corn, wrote and illustrated a recipe card, and ate the popcorn!

Way Up High in the Apple Tree

We read the poem Way Up High in the Apple tree and acted it out replacing the number 2 in the poem with different numbers 6-10. The students illustrated an apple tree and used small red pom poms to practice putting the different number of apples in their trees as we read and I changed the number in the poem. After we read and practiced putting different numbers of apples in our trees, the students drew a number tile out of a bag and painted that many apples in their tree. Then, the students filled in a sentence frame with their name and the number of apples in their tree.

10 Apples Up On Top

We are learning about numbers 6-10 this week. So to go along with our apple study in Math, we read 10 Apples Up On Top. We drew our face and used red pom poms to practice putting apples on top of our head. I chose students to pick a large playing card and we counted that many apples (pom poms) as we put them up on top of our heads. After we practiced several times, the students chose a playing card to create their own apples on top page.

To continue our study of months and to reinforce seasons that my students are learning about in Science, we created a tree map showing what months are in what season. We read A Children's Calendar ( a book of poems for each month) and discussed new vocabulary and what kinds of things occur in each month. The students used clip art to identify holidays, weather, and activities we do in each month. For more practice the students used the Lakeshore science kit Weather and Seasons to sort pictures by which season they occur in.

To help celebrate letter U this week we had a Big Underwear Day. We wear boxer shorts over our clothes and read the book Underwear. The students decorate their own paper underwear to look like their underwear and fill in the sentence to describe it. We discussed and I wrote a story map about the main characters, setting, problem and solution. In this story the Zebra and the Orangutan love big underwear, but the buffalo does not. He is grumpy and even the bugs that stay on his back leave him. The zebra and the orangutan bet the buffalo that he can not say underwear 10 times without laughing. He does it and starts laughing and can not stop. Then he loves big underwear as much as his grassland friends.

Motion Patterns

We learned about making patterns with motions today. I clapped my hands, stomped my foot, stood up and sat down in a certain order and had the children join in. They identified the pattern with words and then with letters. I had volunteers make up their own motion patterns while the other students watched and then we practiced their patterns and identified the core using letters. In dual language classes the students do most of their work in pairs so I had them make up one motion pattern with their partner. Then they glued icons in their math journal to represent their motion patterns and they labeled them using letters. We met back together on the carpet and shared our patterns with the rest of the class.

We began our Word Wall study this week with the words I am. I introduce the words with a poem and by putting them on the word wall. The kids have their own poetry folder and circle the word wall words for the week on their own copy of the poem. They also illustrate the poem. The students also use the new word wall words to illustrate and write a sentence in their writing journal. I also have a make it, stamp it, and write it center they do with their bilingual partners during centers. I forgot to take a picture but I will and add it this week with our new words.

Five Senses

My co-teacher, Ms. Palomo, teaches my class Science in Spanish. They have been learning about the 5 senses. They used smell bottle to discuss their sense of smell, a feely box and stamped ink fingerprint pictures to explore their sense of touch, and made microwave popcorn to explore their sense of hearing and taste.

We began learning about color and shape patterns this week. We started with AB patterns and moved on the ABB, AAB, and ABC patterns. We mostly used link cubes at the beginning of the week, then we moved on to using a variety of manipulatives during math stations on Friday. We also used Kidspiration on the on the Active Board in the computer lab to make and label patterns with color tiles. When we returned to our classroom the students made their own patterns with shapes and labeled them. Next week will will review color and shape patterns and move on to sound and motion patterns.

Little Miss Muffet

We read Little Miss Muffet and then acted out the rhyme replacing our names with Ms. Muffet's name. This students really got into this especially when I did it first and they got really excited when Ms. Wood was scared of the spider. Then we all ate curds and whey ( cottage cheese ) just like Ms. Muffet. Every year I do this it is surprising to me that so many of them like it. Although, it is obvious from the pictures that not everyone liked it.

I started this lesson by singing The Wheels on the Bus song. Then we read The Wheels on the School Bus. Then, the children had a great time making up our own Wheels on the bus song using the sound of the first letter of our name. Finally, we constructed our own school bus and created our rhymes to go with the first letter of our names. This idea came from Deanna Jump's Name unit, which can be purchased at teacherspayteachers.com.

Jack and Jill

We read Jack and Jill and identified the rhyming words Jill and hill. Then we used letter cards to create more words that rhyme with Jill and Hill. We ran out of time to act out the rhyme, but if you look in my blog archive in last September you will see pictures of us acting it out.

Jack Be Nimble

We read Jack Be Nimble on the pocket chart, changed Jack's name to our names, and acted out the rhyme by jumping over a candle stick. Then the kids wrote their name on a sentence frame to change the rhyme.

Humpty Dumpty

We started a unit on Nursery Rhymes this week. To kick off this fun unit we read Humpty Dumpty, identified the rhyming words fall and all, created more words that rhyme with fall and all, and made our own Humpty Dumpties and circled the rhyming words we learned.

Number Formation

While learning about numbers 1-5 this week, we practiced making the numbers is a variety of ways. We made the numbers with play dough, drew them in shaving cream and today we used geo boards and rubber bands to create the numbers. Please see my previous posts for examples of play dough and shaving cream. We also created Venn diagrams to show which numbers have lines, curves or both.

Shaving Cream Numbers

We had a great time writing our numbers in shaving cream. To keep the mess and clean up to a minimum, I used foam plates for the writing surface instead of the table. This worked great and the kids still loved it.
