Bubble Gum Math

We used bingo dobbers to create and solve a subtraction problem using a gumball machine template.

Bubbles Bubbles and More Bubbles

To celebrate the letter b we had a bubble day. We learned how to and practiced blowing bubbles with bubble gum. We wrote the steps to blow a bubble and made a picture of ourselves blowing bubbles. My student intern, Ms. Elkin, even got in on the fun. This idea came from a free lesson on TPT.

Bear Subtraction

For math on our bear day we used gummy bears to create and solve subtraction problems. I forgot to take pictures of the kids work, but here is an example I did. I gave the kids real gummy bears, a small plate, and a numbered die. They counted the gummy bears and rolled the die to see how many to eat (take away). Then they filled in the recording sheet to show the subtraction problem they made. Finally they used paper bears to illustrate their problem so they could eat the real gummy bears for snack.

Blueberries for Sal

In honor of letter B, we had a blue day. We wore blue to school and read Blueberries for Sal. We tasted blueberries and made a subtraction problem using blueberries.

Corduroy

In honor of letter B, we had bear day and read Corduroy. We did a shared writing to re-tell the story using numbers and sentences about the main events. The students wrote all the word wall words and I wrote the other words. We made our own Corduroy and chose the color of his overalls and gave him one button.

Chili Pepper Patterns

We read Spicy Hot Colors and created patterns with chili peppers. We labled our patterns with the core. This idea came from a former teammate Brooke Perry. Her 1st grade blog in on my blog list.

Cowboy Camp

We read Cowboy Camp and discussed what real cowboys do. Then we created a cowboy/cowgirl and wrote about what we would like to do if we were cowboys or cowgirls.

Chicks and Salsa

We read Chicks and Salsa and made chicks. Then we tasted slasa, queso, and ranch. We made a graph to show which dip we liked the best.
We like queso best and did not like salsa at all.

Wanted Posters!

We made horses and took pictures with a cowboy had and bandanna. Then about what we would be wanted for and how much the reward would be. This idea came from a former teammate Booke Perry. Her 1st grade blog is Primary Perspective located on my blog list.

Take a look at our work.

Leprechaun Math

In honor of St. Patricks Day next week, we made a leprechaun and used gold coins to create and solve addition problems. The students chose one of the problems they created to show on their mat.

Gingerbread Cowboy!

We read the Gingerbread Cowboy and compared it to the Gingerbread Man. We illustrated the events in the story and created a flow map to re-tell the story. We also made our own Gingerbread Cowboys.

Bubba and The Cowboy Prince

We read Bubba and the Cowboy Prince and compared this fractured fairy tale to Cinderella. I typed up the similarities and differences between the two stories and the students helped me create a Venn Diagram to compare Bubba and Cinderella. Then the students drew and dictated a sentence to tell their favorite part of Bubba and The Cowboy Prince.
