5 Little Pumpkins Sitting on A Gate



Our poem of the week was 5 Little Pumpkins sitting on a gate. We circled our sight word the and the rhyming words in the poem. On Thursday, we read the book and created a TLC illustration. Then the students circled the and the rhyming words in thier own copy of the poem.

Pumpkin Math



In honor of letter p, we brought pumpkins to school and used them to learn about measurement. We used link cubes to measure the height of our pumpkins and used string to measure the circumference of our pumpkins. we also used paper pumpkins to measure ourselves to find out how many pumpkins tall we are.

The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

We read The Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly and used an old lady puppet and animals to shove the animals in the old lady's mouth to help us re-tell the story. Then we used pictures of the characters to order the events in the story. Finally, my students illustrated the main character and the other characters to make a character map. Shapes




On Monday, we read Shel Silverstien's Poem Shapes and created illustrations to go with it. On Tuesday, we read shape books including The Shape of Things, created a tree map, and illustrated different shapes and objects that were shaped like a rectangle, square, circle or triangle.

Red Ribbon Week Door Decorating Contest

For Red Ribbon Week, my school has a door decorating contest. I came up with this idea since we were learning about community helpers and we were already going to make the firemen.

Millie Waits for the Mail

We read Mille Waits for the Mail with our 2nd grad reading buddies. Then, discussed the characters, setting, problem and solution with our reading buddies. Finally, the students created a their own story map with their reading buddy. They illustrated and wrote to show the characters, setting , problem and solution.

10 Frame

We are learning about numbers 6-10. To practice recognizing sets and composing and decomposing numbers we used a 10 frame mat to build numbers. To introduce this and get the kids excited I used illuminations 10 frame game on the Internet with the activboard.



Silly Little Goose

In honor of letter g, we read Silly Little Goose. We created a flow map to help us re-tell the story.
The goose tried to make her nest in all the animal's houses. Each time she was called a Silly Little Goose.


Finally, she made her nest in the farmer's hat that had been flying around the farm on every page of the book and had goslings.

Eat An Apple Poem

Eat An Apple

Eat an apple
Save the core
Plant the seeds
And grow some more.

We read this poem and created illustrations for each line to show the sequence of the poem. The directions for the art are from Deanna Jumps Apple Unit that can be purchased at teacherspayteachers.com.

Apple Food Tasting!

We tasted different foods made from apples to see if we liked them or not. The students collected data and  recorded it. Then they created graphs to show the results.  Finally, they analyzed thier graphs. My second math class made a class graph of the results.
